Kuching Teochew Association 150th Anniversary Gala Dinner

This year marks the 150th Anniversary of our Kuching Teochew Association. While we celebrate this important event, we are mindful of the time of our forefathers who arrived here and worked so hard to leave us with such a wonderful legacy today.

The highlight of the 150th Anniversary celebration was the Gala dinner which was held at the Kuching Riverside Majestic Hotel on the 1st November, 2014.

The Guest of Honour for the dinner was YAB Chief Minister of Sarawak who was deputised by Deputy Chief Minister YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu ak. Numpang.  The event was attended by dignatories and many guests from outstations throughout Malaysia and overseas who came to celebrate together with us.

The Gala dinner will include a rare performance of Teochew Opera and Teochew Cultural dances and great traditional Chinese music with many colorful shows and full of happiness.

As a Teochew we stand proud today of our achievements and our contributions to our community. Since more than a century ago, our association has been providing inner peace to individuals through our temple at Carpenter street, education through our Kuching High School, resting place for the departed and many charities for the less fortunate. Our Kuching Teochew Association will continue to bring happiness to our Teochew members and our community.

While we are celebrating our 150th Anniversary, there are so many auspicious events celebrating together with us. The Chinese Lovers Day “Yuan Xiao Jie” or “Chap Ngo Mei” coincided with “Valentine’s Day” the Western Lovers Day on the 14th February, 2014. This year is a Chinese leap year  with a leap 9th Lunar Month and this happens only once in this 21st Century and more in the last 20th Century.

Our Association always celebrate the enlightenment of our Teochew Deity on every 9th day of the 9th Lunar month and this is a very auspicious Year for our association.

It is therefore with great happiness that in conjunction with this important event our association has planned for the following series of events.

  1. Chinese New Year Celebration with our TYT Governor.
  2. Yuan Xiao Jie or Chap Ngo Mei.
  3. Coffee Table Book depicting the early Teochew migration to the present day.
